Pine Marten

By SteveMoulding
I wasn't sure whether to upload this shot or not because of the terrible bg, but I thought, you don't often see Pine Marten's on EPZ, so in for a penny in for a pound.

The pine marten is native to Britain and Ireland, though extremely rare in England and Wales. It is a member of the weasel family and related to the mink, otter, badger, stoat and weasel. The pine marten has a slim body and a long tail that is thick and bushy in its winter coat. Rich brown fur contrasts with a creamy-yellow 'bib' on the throat and chest, and with the pale fur within the prominent, rounded ears (the bib varies in size and in some individuals is almost absent). The main body colour varies seasonally and between individuals; in summer the fur is shorter and darker, making the animal appear slimmer than in its thick, mid-brown winter coat. Compared with many of its close relatives, the pine marten has quite a pronounced snout and relatively long legs. It is also extraordinarily agile when moving through trees and crags. Adult pine martens are similar in size to a small/medium-sized domestic cat, and the species was often called the 'marten cat' in the past, with males about a third larger than the females.

Many thanks for all your kind comment and clicks on my uploads, every one is very much appreciated.

Enjoy your week.
Steve.

A super shot of this cute little fellow - the background is not too distracting, in fact it is different!

Fabulous image and detail, because the Pine Marten is so crisp the background enhances the image.

I actually like the bg a lot Steve, it's a little textured with some nice tones and helps the main subject stand out, which in itself is a wonderful image.

Ohhh the dreaded 'background'...do you or don't you upload...I'm glad you did, it's a lovely detailed image, a wonderful capture. As long as you like the image, it really doesn't matter what anyone else says. I must say I hadn't even noticed the background until you mentioned it Grin

A really great capture Steve, is it one from the BWC? as that is the only place I have seen them, and even then they moved too fast for a photo

Maybe I am in the minority but I honestly do not dislike the background Steve! Having said that it's probably dreadful without the beautiful image in the foreground. Superb capture! Lou
