& the shot, crop, light etc is good too

He certainly looks sad, in fact it looks as if he is about to break into tears. This is a photographers portrait rather than one that the sitter would like but it is very good.

I'm not sure if I think it's an improvement to be honest. I like the greater sense of isolation in V2, but the closeness and intimacy of V1 have more impact, and the greater contrast seems to reflect the 'starkness' of the emotion well.
