Out of focus

Playing around look for a new way of doing things, it is an experiment and I would love feedback, of any kind.

An experiment in playing with portraits, how much of the person do you need to convey a mood, how much need be in focus.

Small DoF set and focused on end of guitar to make the musician out of focus. Flash bounced from roof. Converted to B/W by removing Blue channel, and an aggressive contrast curve added. The added noise to simulate grain.

Classic shot John, and I'd say this is a very good attempt. Like the use of reduced DoF, and yes it does still convey enough mood. B&W conversion and contrast works well. Only question would be whether you want the head of the guitar in focus or his chord hand? May have more impact if his hand was in focus and the head was just out of field? Just a thought anyway ;o)

I'm with Nik on that one, it's almost there but would work better if your point of focus was the same as the guitarists.

I actually like this one John, who said a portrait had to be in focus anyway. Works for me.

I like this one John, I've been thinking of doing a similar shot of my son, who also plays guitar & this works really well.
