Swirling Stacks ...

By sut68
... colour though!!!

Posted a mono version originally with this [colour] shot as a variant. Having come across it again I decided it deserved it's own airing ... hope you don't mind.

Taken in the pleasant company of Andy, Graham and Fran early morning back in March ... a great day, cheers guys Smile

Enjoy your weekend folks.

A chuffing great shot! And to capture all those engines in one shot, too...amazing.

Think it's the sense of smoke movement that do it for me in this shot Paul. Of course, the composition is great as well, but the smoke makes me feel like I am sat watching the engines.

The limited palette and excellent quality deserve to be shown Paul. I'm sure this wonderful image has lost buckets of tone and subtle colour in the conversion for the web, it still holds it's head up well, fine detail and powerful composition such as we've come to expect from you Paul. Delightful image beautifully processed.

Thanks very much Dougie. Actually, it hasn't done too badly in the conversion at all and remains pretty faithful to the original. Though to see it in its full glory is another thing IMO, reminds me to get this one framed properly!!!

Swirling stacks, three trains (though apparently important/significant ones).

Hmm, not sure I get this train lark, perhaps that's why I had to steal John's (Strawman's) anorak, but I know a pic when I like it.

Being me, and being picky and I'm sure it's there for a reason, but I find the orangey thing (don't do technical when it comes to train or railway bits) is just a bit annoying. I keep finding my gaze anchoring to it because it is about the only bit of colour. I would possibly crop it or desaturate it.

sut68 18 2.0k 77 England
11 Jul 2008 6:45PM
Thanks folks.

I'm assuming by the orangey bit you mean the two lit lamps on the front of the middle engine Cheryl? I suppose I could've desaturated it/them, but then it/they wouldn't be 'on' ... that said, it certainly doesn't detract on the large print, which is the main criteria for me. Cheers for donning your [or should I say John's] anorak though Wink

Thanks Lesley, our posts must've crossed. The exposure for this was 1/2 second just to try to get some movement in the smoke. There was also some ND grads involved to hold the sky back too ... I think I used 5 stops here.

Nope not on the engine, off to the very left of the frame. One part is orange and the other red.

I expect my eye to be drawn to the engines Tongue
sut68 18 2.0k 77 England
11 Jul 2008 7:49PM
Ah, now I see what you mean. That is a valuable piece of heritage railway equipment, though you may know it better as a skip Wink There's also a piece of orange ironwork too.

I can see what you mean about dialling out the colour on it, and I may investigate that, but as it really doesn't bother me that much - please don't hold your breath for a variant.

Enjoy your weekend though, whatever you get up to.

Lovely, thanks for your comments on my landscape shots. I thought I'd have a look and see what your background is and as I thought you've got it spot on with your lighting. I'll be looking at your landscape shots to learn I think. I've always been wildlife orientated.

Thanks for your comments and please feel free to suggest things as I'll always take it on board.
