Arctic sunlight

By AnnChown
I'm back from a memorable trip to north Norway, well within the Arctic Circle. The weather certainly lived up to it, so much so that we had the second part of our trip cancelled and rescheduled because of an Arctic storm which prevented us from getting to the far north coast by boat or plane. We had very little light - mostly blizzards, but this was yesterday morning at 11.26 am local time in Tromso. The sun still hasn't appeared in the sky in this part of the world and it was dark again by around 14.30.
Thanks for looking and for your time - comments and criticisms are, as usual, welcomed.
Ann
PS - we did see the Northern Lights but not the spectacles we'd hoped for. Strangely (for me) they are more obvious through a camera lens.

I like seeing those little lights on each side of the image. Make me think most people are staying inside where it's warm. An excellent image.......Sandy

V2 for me Ann. Better balanced light and showing that little extra detail in the boats.
Brian.
Wonderfully subdued light and subtle colours. V2 may appeal more, but I'm sticking with the more natural and probably lifelike light and colour on V1.

Shame that you didn't see the splendour of these lights, but there's time yet.

The light show up on the digital sensor better than the naked eye. The colours and light are pumped up a little by the sensor as you will see in any image but it'll show even more in low light.

I also like them both but I think V2 gives slightly more detail which I think enhances the image. I wondered where you had been since I had not seeen any new pictures from you for a while! I thought you would recognise the scarves in my recent upload! Ann.

The low light levels are so typical of this time of year in these northern latitudes, but it brings an extra quality to your image here, Ann: two excellent versions and I'm torn between the two. Perhaps V 1 is the more natural and a record of how you saw the scene.
You do manage to get around and it's a pleasure for me at least to see such places, being more or less stuck as I am close to home.
Look forward to more.
Ronnie.

V1 for me. Darker, moodier, more mysterious. I don't subscribe to the view that we need to peer into every shadow.

V1 for my taste, too, Ann. It may be darker, moodier etc. but it's still a whole lot brighter than we have had here for the past week . . .
Welcome back!

Since you've been here:
Hyggelig å vite at dere hadde en fin tur, Ann. Ja, det er vinter i Norge og vi har hatt ned mot minus 20 grader her også. Lyset kan bli meget vakkert hvis du får skyfri himmel, men da må du være veldig heldig.GrinGrinGrin

Very different conditions to when we were there a few year ago - then we were walking around at midnight in broad daylight - but it was the end of May!!
I think the light in V2 is my choice for this lovely shot.

Translation, and Malc's Norwegian is terrible Wink (He'll get me for that if he reads back here - lol)

Nice to know that you had a fine trip, Ann. Yes, it's winter in Norway and we have had close to minus 20 degrees here too. The light can be beautiful if you have a cloudless sky, but then you have to have luck on your side too.

I was in Lofoten the the entire winter of 1993 - I was so light deprived I was going crazy. If it had not been for the snow it would have been truly pitch dark. I did see a lot of Northern light displays though, but back then I didn't have a decent camera.

Wonderful image -low light very natural but I'd be tempted to brighten a little myself.
Saw a programme where somebody in Northern Ireland was photographing Northern Lights
and I think I can understand what you mean about seeing the lights through the camera.
Perhaps in the vastness, they're not so impressive but in a photo they're framed and look
more spectacular.

You are very brave! No way you could talk me into driving all the way to the north of Norway in winter!
Or, if you flew there and then hired a car, to face the severe weather in a car I hardly k ow.
