The Smokehouse

By Taff
Boy it's difficult to get good shots in winter. The Sky is that horrible grey colour, it's almost permanently dark, and by the time you driven to that location you fancied it's too dark and you have to come home!

These are the same cottages as in the previous "Cold dark days of winter shot" just taken from a different angel.

A whole host of Photoshop enhancements have been done to try and improve what was originally a very dull shot - here goes:-

Used adjust "Shadow / Highlights" to bring back some detail into the Cliffs, these were previously very dark.

Selected the Sea, wound up the blue and magenta. Then added Motion blur to give the Sea that Ghostly feel.

Added a completely different sky as the original one was very grey with no cloud detail whatsoever. Wound up the Red to give it a Sunset feel.

Finally added a load of grain, then used Auto adjust on the 'level' command to balance everything out.

Though it's a very simple picture I'm quite pleased with the results, would be more than happy to hear you guys pass comment (Good or bad)

I love it, full of textures and colours and I think the composition is spot on.

Worth the hard work. The colours all compliment each other and the composition is spot on.

Great work - perhaps the border is a little strong - maybe a thinner black line - the bit in the middle is really good and looks even better large - click, Martin

love the subject, the light has come out a touch flat...i'd like to see the original dark winter sky(I'm a fan of winter skys), and it does look manipulated....but the subject and comp deserve a click on their own.

Excellent manipulation but there's a falseness about the water, I think you went just a bit too far with the blur perhaps?
Love the colouration of the whole, the sky is delightful. Maybe the outer black line is a bit heavy on the border but we all see borders our own way..not important at all.
You're really getting to know Photoshop that's obviousSmile
Couldn't resist playing..modified it..see what you think Martin. new water, enhanced colour and re-sharpened.

Hi Leo,

hate to admit it but your version is better than mine - think the colour of the water does it !

And a few people commented on the thickness of the water.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble.

Hi Taff
Good image. Have you tried making minor tweeks in curves?
