Birds in Snow: Northern Flicker

By taggart
Birds in Snow: Northern Flicker
Colaptes auratus. 12 inches. male

The PolarVortex brought us birds from the tiny wren to this HUGE NORTHERN FLICKER! This woodpecker usually feeds on the ground as they prefer ants and beetles-- The male and female appear the same but the female lacks the black mustache.
I think the larger birds found this mesh feeder to be a resting/watching place as it was easy for their feet to grab onto tho he appears to have sampled some of the ground nuts and niger seeds???

This is the last image I will include in "Birds in Snow". Thank you all for your supportive, thoughtful and overwhelming interest!

Have a great weekend!

Our Northern Flickers have vanished. Reckon you stole them! Still have the Carolina Wrens and Brown Creepers though. I need to get me a 400mm lens.
Great image. Really hope it gets warmer for you very soon.

Seeing these beautiful birds at your feeder is one advantage of the severe weather Jenn.

Stellar shot Jenn, they are an attractive and large bird . Those big beaks can damage ones home as they will use it incessantly on the exterior to look for insects . Freinds of ours had to have one trapped and removed due to the damage it was doing despite their attempts to scare it away .
Cheers Walt
