Brief Landing

The insect is a variety of hover fly--exploring the still blooming garden phlox--

NOTE: The version is an update on the un-identified fungi of a previous image--- for those who offered some id's---perhaps now?

The lead image is lovely, Jenn: I have perused my books on fungi and can find nothing that matches in appearance your image. All I can confirm, as you already know, is that it is a bracket fungus of some type. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

The fungi is interesting ,sorry cannot I.D it .But looks like the end of a sea lions flipper . Hover flies are so cool ..I love it when hundreds invade and buzz inside our flowering crabapple every June .

A good lead Jenn, I like the movement in the Hoverfly.
Your Fungus is indeed a 'Bracket', the only one I could suggest would be Oxyporus populinus 3-6 cms across, which grows on trunks of deciduous trees....don't eat it !!!
