Downy Woodpecker

By taggart
Downy Woodpecker
Picoides pubescens 6 inches

This tiny woodpecker does not walk or hop on a flat place, but must use its well adapted feet for climbing. In this image, this bird was the winner of 4 competing for the suet feeder--which is just under the wooden brace.

V2 shows a Downy on a sycamore tree--showing the markings on his back, including the red feathers which signify that it is a male bird.

Thank you to Nathan, Eastlands (John) Cathy&Stan and SweetPea for their much appreciated User Awards for 'Melody!'

I prefer the less competing b/g in V1 - he does look very tactile.
The bark itself makes a great image in V2.

How lucky you were to get these photos of the youngsters! Two great photos but I like V2 - the bark is spectacular in pattern and texture - and I like the red patch on little 'downy' Smile

We haven't had many of these this year, just the larger Hairy.
I have peanut butter smeared on several trees, which they all seem to be liking a lot.
