Andrei In The Usual Place

By david deveson
Andrei is 24 years of age.
He came to Italy four weeks ago hoping to find gold in them there mountains.
He listened to the false offerings of the ticket vendors who drag the streets of Bucharesti looking for suckers just like him.
Every morning he drags himself out from below the platforms at Central Station and takes up his position in the usual place, just like the day before and the day before that and the day before..... well, you've got the picture.
Here it is.
It sucks.

This is so depressing - is there a way out for people like this?

The state some people find themselves in is so sad. Blimey I'm lucky.

A great image, fine photo-journalism.

Yes Chris, we are lucky.... the sad thing is that people like Andrei aren't asking for the moon.... for sure some money, no matter how little, always helps.... more often than not it's just someone who sits down to talk, to offer them a sandwich, a brioche, anything which suggests to them that they actually exist. The more I talk to people like Andrei I'm not even sure anymore if it's them that find themselves in an impossible situation or rather the system that really gives them little or no chance at all. At the end of the day, for sure there are villains amongst them as there are in any level of society, but at the very least we should look at them as human beings. they deserve nothing less.
