I dream of Silence

By TanyaH
Going for a walk at lunchtime with my camera phone seems to be a bad idea in some ways, although it does let me capture the basis of an idea to work on. The camera phone is only 8MP so not necessarily capable of capturing the best quality nowadays, given the specs of some of the high-end digital SLRs.

But with the kind of processing I seem to drawn to at the moment, that doesn't actually matter. In fact, it helps the creative process as I need to find interesting ways to disguise the cr*p resolution ... which in turn furthers my understanding of both Photoshop and post processing techniques.

I'm actually pleased with the way this turned out - not necessarily what I had in mind when I started, but it just kinda morphed into what you see before you now!

Very good work! It emphasizes the concept "its the photographer not the camera"

Hi Tanya,

I love the texture effect and the gloom and doom feel about this pic, spooky.
Nit pick, not sure if the crows are in the right place for balance? Might be me?

Thank you for the comments so far on this one - very much appreciated (I don't say that often enough when people comment, and I should!)

And it's a very good nit pick point about the position of the crows, Keith Grin

I did play around quite a bit with the positioning of them before leaving them there. They just didn't look right anywhere else, for some reason. For me, the image is all about that lone birch tree wanting the crows to shut up and go away, so it can enjoy the solitude and silence of the reeds again. So putting them there above the tree seemed to strengthen that relationship between them and tie in more with the title, if that makes sense?

The birds seem to be circling round for prey. The branches are shooing them away. Well that's how I see it. I like the height, the sky is so cold and empty.

8MP is more than the early pro quality DSLRs had. Unless you're printing BIG, you don't really need more unless you're one of those weird pixel-peepers, and you certainly don't need more for the Web.

As for the image...I'll put it this way...I'm going to download it and tell people IT'S MINE.
I'm going to break my self-imposed rule of sticking to ONE award per day because this is so damn good.

Wow, what a response! I'm both humbled and elated ... I know I like it, but to have that same feeling back from other people is wonderfully encouraging. My mojo has been a bit AWOL recently, so thank you all so much for the confidence boost Smile

Isabel and Alan - double thank you's to you both for your user awards. Given that I admire the ethereal work of the pair of you so much, you can't know how much that means!

for me this is such a painful, yet beautiful image....
there is an overwhelming sense of darkness, but light still shines on the branches and the tree in the center, beneath the birds....

but, the birds are confused!

they cant tune in to the vibrations they are used to!

they are lost!... they dream of silence!..... MUSIC

Particularly drawn to this one. Great use of colour and light. The composition is superb, leading you into the birch tree and the scene balances well with the texture(s)

My only crit would be with the birds. The middle area of the 'flock' seems a little cluttered and could possibly be thinned out giving a greater visual impact.

Love it though. Anything that shows good creativity, trees, birds and careful colouring is a winner in my book Smile

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the positive feedback.
I agree about the birds in the middle - I'm still learning about judicious use of a bird brush and I'm sure that element of my imagery will settle down to normal proportions over time Grin
