Is the image as shot and the fact they appear to be almost touching wings an optical illusion? or has there been a bit of adjustment here?

Hi - yes, exactly as shot with the exception of slight levels tweaking and cropping. It is an optical illusion - I was just lucky to get the angle - pure chance!
