Owl Butterfly (Caligo Memnon)

By teocali
I spent a lovely day at the RHS Wisley on Friday where they are holding a butterfly event in their hot-house. The atmosphere was tropical and it took nearly 30 mins for my camera to warm up and get rid of the condensation. It was a pleasure to meet up with EPZ members Maiwand, Doghouse 765 and peter_oak who were also enjoying the chance of photographing the beautiful butterflies loose in the greenhouse.
This is the Owl Butterfly (Caligo Memnon) and native of Costa Rica. It is a large specimen and most of them were intent on sleeping or feeding, with wings furled, showing their wonderful "owl" eye. Unfurled wings are a glorious dusky bluey-purpley brown and when in flight the wings flap slowly and they then glide, in ghostlike fashion - fascinating. Hope you enjoy this series.
Settings varied between F7.1 and F4, 1/250sec, ISO 400 - 160, sometimes in AV and sometimes in manual, handheld

View large - F11 if you have time - there is a lot of detail.

Thank you all so much for your super response to my last two uploads - I am overwhelmed and very grateful Smile

4 super shots Sylvia showing the Owl in its glory. I just couldn't get one with the wings open. I particularly like the angles you have on them and they make up a great series

For detail and markings v1 is a winner, but for me the blue metalic colours of v2,3 and 4 are wonderful and they really are my favourites

A lovely series of shots Sylvia and I see you've been mixing with the 'big guns', hope you all enjoyed it. I like #1 for colour and detail but I also like #3 for it's angle. A nice set to have in your porfolio.

Thank you so much everybody for your kind comments and votes - as
always so much appreciated Smile
The butterflies are open to the public until Feb 22nd so if you live within striking distance of RHS Wisley it is well worth a visit. I am contemplating going again!
