An Unexpected Caller

By teocali
A near full frame capture (a little cropped away from the top and RHS) of a wild Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), who suddenly appeared on the top of my feeder, as I was photographing juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers in our garden yesterday. Taken 6.5m from subject, tripod.

I was concentrating on a baby GSW clinging motionless to the side of a wooden stump adjacent to the feeder and wondering why the baby wasn't moving, when he suddenly uttered a loud squawk and made his escape Smile It was only then that I looked up and saw the predator, who stayed for a fleeting moment before flying away! GSWs are, I believe, one of the Sparrowhawks favourite meals!! This one went away empty handed Smile

Many thanks for your C&Cs on my last upload - always very much appreciated Smile

Great reaction shot Sylvia to suddenly switch from one target to another like that. I think we all take Richard's point about feeders but this one was surely too good to miss. Glorious bird and exposure.GrinGrin
