Jemma and Chihuahua

By teocali
This was one of my first DSLR RAW photos, taken last Christmas. It was in very low light - there was a red cast to the picture and the background was very "busy", so I played around with it a bit in Photoshop.
Portraits are something I find rather difficult so any tips/advice would be gratefully received Smile

Excellent portrait with good lighting. I agree with the mod that the skin tones need a slight adjustment, but it is an easy thing to put right. Andy

Thank you for the mod Willie - the crop makes the photo sit much more "comfortably" and, as Andy so rightly says, the skin tones are improved
The lovely thing about this site is that people are always ready, willing and able to give constructive advice to beginners Smile

Sorry Sylvia, - I did write a comment, but I must have forgotten to press submit!

The shot reminded me of an "olden days" pic when I looked at it first, however there was a greenish cast I wasnt sure you intended. If you did, the mods have removed it, - and I must apologise!

It might be a white balance issue, - the light was low as you mentioned, so try setting the white balance to the conditions rather than leaving on auto, - many cameras are notoriously unreliable in auto mode in low or artificial light. Or, beter still, shoot in RAW, leave white balance on auto, and then you can change white balance any way you want in post processing.

The original left the partial hand and dogs leg too high in the frame, and is better cropped lower.

I happy you find the mod useful, - hopefully the comments will help also,

Excellent the way the image blends so well into the background, OK..the skin tone needed the correction but you made an excellent job of the image none the less. I would have vignetted or cloned the clean line out on the hand in the image to blend in with the rest but it's worth far more clicks IMO

This almost reminds me of the religious iconography that we are so used to seeing (especially over the forthcoming weeks), almost Madonna and child in composition (although Jemma's hair is more like that of Christ's rather than Mary's!) I hope you are not offended by these comments (so easy to do these days) it's just how I view the photograph.

I'm sure other people have thought the same thing but maybe have not been brave enough to put it into words! If you don't agree that's fine!

I think this is an excellent capture.
Deserved more votes in my opinion.
