Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker

By teocali
A Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) taken in our garden a couple of days ago. The juvenile is distinguishable by the full red cap on the front of the head, which disappears with maturity. We have a number of these around at the moment. In an average breeding season a pair of GSWs will raid blue tit nests and feed well in excess of 200 blue tit chicks to their own youngsters. They will even pick them out of nest boxes and if a metal grid is fitted to the nest box opening to prevent this, they will bore a hole below in order to extract their prey.

This is a full frame capture with a little cropped off from the top to balance the composition.

Thank you all for your C&Cs on my last upload, with a special THANK YOU to Richard(MossyOak) and Ian(Maccas) for their User Awards. All very much appreciated and valued Smile

I had no idea they were such predators on the blue tit chicks, Sylvia: but what a fine shot of this w/p youngster in your own garden, a fine pose and captured in excellent detail.
