Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus)

By teocali
Another from our trip to Cape Cod last June. The Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) - 7.25" long, 19" wingspan, 1.9oz in weight. Uncommon and local on sandy beaches where it nests just above the high-tide line. Solitary when foraging with rarely more than a few individuals found together at any one time. They have a clear mellow piping voice.

I was lucky to come across these just at the time the fledglings were appearing for the first time and I have found capturing these about the most difficult exercise to date! The tiny chicks (in versions 3,4,5,6) were scuttling around incredibly quickly, not staying still for a moment. These birds are terrific camouflage artists and it was hard to pick them out from the sandy habitat. The chicks have had to fairly aggressively cropped down. Hope you like them.

Settings:- F/5.6 1/1600sec ISO320 420mm manual handheld

Many thanks for your great response to my Downy Woodpecker - very much appreciated as ever.
