Coming Through The Steam

By Therapy
Taken at Swanage Spring Steam Gala 2016. Slightly tweaked to emphasize steam clouds.
The train was about to go under a bridge and I wanted to get this before it entered the bridge as it would have then been in shadow.

Not sure why at these settings, but the loco is not very sharp. Must be failue to focus properly! It does need to be sharp.

For me there is actually a bit too much steam. Some to each side but a bit of loco detail in the middle bottom would be a more satisfactory composition

My first thought is the same as Paul's - I'd expect more sharpness. However, I don't recognise the lens - is it a manual-focus lens, rather than a purpose-built micro four thirds piece of glassware? That could explain a lot...

In my mod, I've corrected a slight tilt to the left, and cropped a lot. The house on the left adds little, and the rails at the bottom are distracting: while I'd normally suggest framing to include the wheels, even though you cna't see them, the tighter crop seems more mysterious and atmospheric - do you agree?

Tanks for the mod. The lens is the kit lens which came with my camera. I had already cropped off the bridge that the engine and, looking at the original, it may have focused on a piece of lineside equipment that was closer to me.

Thanks for your comments.

I'd like to welcome you to EPZ and the Critique Gallery, too, Jeff.

When I first viewed this, I felt there was a bit too much steam and that it was a pity a lot of the engine was obscured. Then I remembered all the other steam engine images I had really enjoyed, and most of them had very little of the engine showing, that's the atmosphere that I like.

But here you have a horizontal bank of steam, and so I think that John's crop does the trick for me, that works.
