Butterflies, Monteverde

By timiano
This was taken at Monteverde Butterfly Garden in Costa Rica. The Garden consists of about 5 enclosed areas each mimicking different subtle eco system changes that Costa Rica has.

The most amazing butterfly, and fairly common in Costa Rica I might add, is the Blue Morpho. Unfortunately, like many butterflies, when it lands it closes its wings which are fairly dull compared to the brilliant blue patterns on the top side.

Can't remember the name of this pair, but I was fairly pleased how it turned out. It was taken handheld at 1/500 @ f3.2, which has still got motion blur along the wing tips. Being a black subject has made exposure tough, so I think a little fill would have gone a long way to get a bit of detail out of the blacks. The x-sync of the 5D is only 1/200 though which would probably have made blur worse (correct me if I'm wrong), and I'd only had the unit for a week and hadn't got around to testing the high speed flash (FP).

Anyway enough, tell me what you think.

Its not a ***** photo, its rether cute really.
However it looks a bit muddled and the butterflies aren't very clear, not even in the large version where they look better.
I think too the butterflies are too central, choping a bit off the left might balance the image better, you get more impact then. Thirds rule really works sometimes!
