The Salisbury

By tony64
Good Afternoon everyone, and happy New Year to everyone who regularly views my pictures!

Todays 'Pubsign Challenge' is a fine example of a Victorian former gin palace. The gentleman on the pub sign is the Marquess of Salisbury, three times Prime Minister from 1885 to 1901. His family once owned the freehold on the property. The pub was built originally as a restaurant called the Salisbury Stores in 1892, evident by the double "S" etched into the windows (V6) but was transformed six years later into the glittering pub we see today. The interior was very dark and with only my Lumix on me, not perfect shots, so have included one interior to give a feel.

If your visiting London and want to visit a traditional London pub with excellent food to boot, You could do no better than visit the Salisbury which is just off the Charing Cross Road, in St Martin's Lane.

A little Lumix goes a long way, Tony Smile
Photographically the best pub set you have produced. The sign painter has done a good job on the portrait; the building is well recorded, the interiors superb. Has to be V4 for me, too!

Such an elegant pub. v1 looks like he disapproves of the whole thing. but v4 looks like a jolly good spot to spend a winters evening!
