This week Mrs T and I went out to Pew Tor via the famous Windy Post, passing Vixen Tor en-route for a quick photoshoot. The weather once again was less than ideal with thick wet Fog and strong wind filled with moisture. Photographing was a challenge as I could only shoot with my back to the wind or have a layer of drizzle on the front of the lens (soft focus effect).
Windy Post.
Pew Tor.
As I said the fog was upon us again, this was what we were met with as we left the car park at the top of Pork Hill.
It was blowing in and out on the strong winds but more in than out.
As we dropped off the top of the hill it cleared a bit and we could see a bit more of our route.
Pew Tor though was still shrouded in fog.
It wasn’t long before we reached the Leat and Windy Post (Photo 1), after that shoot we headed for Feather Tor to shoot Vixen Tor in the fog.
Vixen Tor is a very distinctive Tor well worth a visit but it sits inside an enclosure that is not open to public access, shame as it would be a nice Tor to explore.
We spent quite a while on Feather Tor shooting Vixen Tor, looking for the best viewpoint before moving off to Pew Tor, there is a Leat to cross but there is also a convenient Clapper Bridge.
Looking back towards Feather Tor we could see some Ponies sheltering from the wind and drizzle.
As we headed up to Pew Tor the fog finally relented (but not the wind nor that moisture in the wind), we got our first real clear view of Pew Tor.
As you look at Pew Tor from a distance it looks less than impressive, however, when you get up close you see the many fascinating rock formations that make up this very interesting Tor.
We thought this one looked like a petrified old man peering around cover watching us.
This one we thought looked like the head of Godzilla.
Whilst on these walks Mrs T and I have great fun likening rock formations to faces etc, I’ll leave the rest to your imaginations, perhaps you could comment below what you see in the rocks.
After having lunch on Pew Tor we headed further South to look for a disused Quarry that I had seen on the map, on the way we noticed a lone tree on the reverse slope of Pew Tor it will be worth a visit when the light and foliage is right.
We found the Quarry, it is small but looks like it would be a welcome shelter in the heat of a summer’s day.
After a quick shoot at the Quarry we decided to head back to the car, on the way we saw a different perspective to Pew Tor and it made me decide that a re-visit would be in order but spending much more time on the Tor itself.
We took a slightly different route back to the car as we could see further now, we came across a sleeping Dragon.
At the top of that last rise we looked back to Pew Tor.
That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.
