Once again we set off on a Photowalk on Dartmoor with “changeable” weather (normal for Dartmoor). Our main objectives were the stone cross known as Windy Post then on to Pew Tor for a lunch stop before heading over to the notorious Vixen Tor.
We parked at Pork Hill car park just South of Cox Tor (free) arriving just as the rain was leaving.
This car park has great views over the West edge of the Moor.
We set off South in search of the much photographed Windy Post which is an ancient and rugged granite cross on the North side of Feather Tor.
The heavy clouds in the distance gave some indication of what Dartmoor had in store for us.
Once across the Leat and up the hill a bit we crested Feather Tor to see our first view of Pew Tor in the distance.
Feather Tor, whilst not a significant Tor, has some interesting rock formations worthy of photographing.
Once through the rocks we see again Pew Tor in the distance.
Pew Tor has some interesting rock formations as well.
From the top of Pew Tor you can see Bodmin Moor in Cornwall on a good day.
As well as the Church on Brentor which is on the extreme West of the National Park.
We had lunch sheltering in the rocks on Pew Tor surrounded by the strange facelike rock formations.
Pew Tor has also a Dartmoor Letterbox (look away if you are a Letterboxer) that is not particularly well hidden.
As we moved away from Pew Tor I looked back and saw cloud formations that reminded me of the old Smoke Signals from the 1970’s Western Films.
On route to Vixen Tor we came across this small pond/large puddle.
Just after the pond we caught our first sight of Vixen Tor and more heavy clouds.
More shots of Vixen Tor………. and a Pony.
As we moved away from Vixen Tor I looked back and the light on the Tor was really spooky it looked like the spirit of the Tor was surrounding it with a skull just behind it.
But it didn’t seem to bother the wildlife (first time I’ve seen a Pheasant on the open Moor).
Now we were heading back to the Car Park but not before negotiating some rather wet ground.
We passed more Ponies.
We got rained on a bit going back to the car by this.
But that paled into insignificance when this arrived just as we got back to the car.
That’s all for this week folks.
