This week after storm Barra more heavy rain was forecast to come in on the Thursday afternoon so Mrs T and I set off earlier than normal on a shorter walk than normal to try to get out and back before the rain hit and because it was to be a shorter walk I decided to take along the Fujifilm GFX50S. I decided to go out to Hound Tor as it is very close to parking then go over to a Medieval Settlement before going on to Greator Rocks for a quick lunch stop before returning via the same route.
Hound Tor.
Haytor Rocks from Hound Tor.
Hound Tor is as I said very close to the car park, this shot is from 20 or so meters from it.
It is only a short walk to the top of the Tor where there some splendid rock formations.
After exploring Hound Tor we set off along a well defined track to find the Medieval Settlements which were much larger than we had thought they might be.
They sit between Hound Tor and Greator Rocks.
The Settlement must have been quite a large community back in its day as there were remains of several buildings that looked like dwellings.
After the Settlements we set off to Greator Rocks where we would have a slightly early lunch the rain had not arrived yet.
Greator Rocks is a very craggy Tor.
There are some good views of Haytor Rocks from Greator Rocks but those skies were bringing the rain so we decided to head back to the car.
A little further up towards Hound Tor I shot back to Haytor Rocks with the long lens, the clouds were really full by now, the wise man would head for the car rapido...........
As we set off again for the car I couldn’t resist setting up the GFX for a shot of Haytor Rocks with the 100-200 lens.
Even as I was collapsing the tripod I could feel the rain starting, by the time it was all packed up it had arrived. Still we only had about 800m to go anyway so we just got our heads down and went for it.
As we reached the top of Hound Tor again there was a slight lull in the rain but in the distance we could see what was coming.
All in all the day was worth while, I managed to get some shots with the GFX which I don’t normally do on these trips and we just about won the race with the rain just as we got on the road home it came down very heavy and did so all the way home.
I do love that 65x24 aspect ratio in the GFX though it makes framing Pano’s really easy.
That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.
