This week Mrs T and I went to another small Tor this time on the far East of Dartmoor called Bag Tor, then on to Haytor Down to Smallcombe Rocks for some great vistas, sadly though the light was very dull and overcast with lots of haze to contend with. Hey-ho you take what you’re given and work with it.
Bag Tor.
Smallcombe Rocks.
We parked across from the Haytor Rocks but unfortunately the pay machine was not working.
The route down to Bag Tor was along a well defined path that led straight away from the car park almost all the way down to the Tor. It wasn’t long before we got sight of the Tor, it sits behind a Newtake wall which isn’t clear on the map.
Although not a big Tor it is quite pretty.
After a brief exploration we set off back to the car for a lunch stop, we got a good view of Saddle Tor on the way back, it’s easy to see how this one got its name.
Once we got back to the car we moved from this car park to another one on Haytor Down where we had our lunch before heading over the Down to Smallcombe Rocks. As we were heading through the gorse (on a good path) we found this cage, complete with doggy bed, which I surmised to be where the hound of the Baskervilles is kept.
On the way up there is a great view of Haytor Rocks and the main disused Quarry.
It wasn’t much longer before we got our first view of Smallcombe Rocks which have great views of that whole area.
From here you can see Hound Tor and Greator Rocks.
As well as Hollwell Tor and the other disused Quarry.
I thought the views of Holwell Tor and the big cliffs of the Quarry were particularly spectacular and I will definitely re-visit this place when there is better light.
All in all it was a successful photowalk despite the awful light.
That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.
