This week I was once again dodging bad weather, the gap this time was around Burrator Reservoir across to Venford Reservoir so I decided to go out to the Drizzlecombe Stone Row via Ditsworthy Warren House, Plym Steps then over to Higher and Lower Hartor Tors before heading back via the disused Eylesbarrow Tin Mine, I parked in the Car Park beside the Gutter Tor Refuge.
Drizzlecombe Stone Row.
Ditsworthy Warren House.
As I was leaving the Car Park I took a shot back towards Sheeps Tor it looked quite nice in the sunshine.
Then I looked towards Hen Tor (the way I was going), it didn’t look so good.
I was soon on the way to Ditsworthy Warren House along the track between Gutter Mire and Gutter Tor, Gutter Mire was wet.
The clouds were closing in on Gutter Tor.
I was soon at Ditsworthy Warren House, the cloud ever present.
I did feel some slight rain so I hung around the house complex for a short while to see if it came to anything, thankfully it didn’t.
I set off again heading for the Drizzlecombe Stone Rows intent on catching the Menhir in some of that light that comes between the clouds in these conditions. This Menhir is reportedly the tallest on Dartmoor and it has a distinctive shape.
I carried on along the stone row.
At the North end of the stones there are some ancient Settlements.
I looked across to the Northeast, the clouds were brewing.
My plan was to go over to Higher Hartor Tor which I did, then down to Lower Hartor Tor, I shot Higher Hartor Tor from a distance, the actual Tor is a bit uninspiring.
On from here I decided to go past Lower Hartor Tor and on to Plym Steps so again I shot Lower Hartor Tor from the track before going on, knowing I would be back up to the actual Tors on my way back to the car.
From the slopes of Lower Hartor Tor I got a good view of Plym Steps.
I decided it would be worth a closer look so I went on down and set up my tripod.
On the way back up to the Tors there is a large Settlement Enclosure.
From here it wasn’t long before I was on Lower Hartor Tor by far the most interesting of the two.
I made my way up to Higher Hartor Tor.
Next checkpoint after this was the Old Eylesbarrow Tin Mines, now long disused and in ruins.
I made my way back via the Bridleway past another relic of the mining.
I then just followed the very prominent Bridleway all the way back to the Car Park, this shot of one of the many Boundary Stones is facing back the way I had come.
Once again I managed to avoid getting a soaking.
That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.
