Dartmoor Photowalk 21 Hound Tor and Greator Rocks

This week once again the weather was looking favourable after some early rain. I was headed for Saddle Tor North Car Park as the starting point for my walk up between Saddle Tor and Haytor Rocks, on to Hollwell Tor then Smallcome Rocks. Once again as well as my usual Fuji X-T2 I took along my Bronica SQ-Ai with a 6x45 Back on it loaded with Fuji Provia 100F. My objective was to photograph Hound Tor and Greator Rocks from the South, here’s one of the Bronica shots.

The setup.

As I parked I looked South and watched the rain drift further away, pleased to see it and hopeful it was the last of it.

I headed in the opposite direction up past Saddle Tor heading for the disused Quarries.

The Disused Quarries.

I thought this was a rather interesting rock stack.

After the disused Quarries I headed for Hollwell Tor although I did stop and set up the Bronica for that opening shot, I also took a shot with the Fuji, just in case. Hound Tor is on the left, Greator Rocks centre and the Tor on the right is Hollwell Tor (my next destination).

I passed Emsworthy Rocks I have photographed that tree several times and it was hard to resist the urge to detour and shoot it again, however, I had a plan and not enough time so on I went.

As I looked back to Haytor Rocks I was surprised there was no one on it, normally it is mobbed by people who want to get to the top.

It wasn’t long before I was on the slopes of Hollwell Tor.

As I crested the slope to the main Tor I saw what I thought looked just like a breaching Beluga Whale, I had to take the shot.

I have been up this tor before but never noticed this lone tree on its edge.

I spent quite a while on Hollwell Tor looking for compositions and waiting for light, I decided to have my lunch there while waiting for light, the view was nice.

There were some more interesting rock formations on the main Tor.

My route back to the car took me under Haytor Rocks again, this time there were people on it a more usual view of it.

I picked up the old Tramway which took me back towards Hollwell Tor.

I reached the junction and veered off towards Saddle Tor eventually leaving the Tramway altogether.

As I got on to the slopes of the Tor these Ponies were kind enough to pose for me.

That’s all for this week folks, as always, comments welcome.
