Dartmoor Photowalk 25 Hound Tor and Greator Rocks

This week the forecast was for rain coming in from the West just after lunchtime so I planned a shorter walk on the East side of the Moor. I went over to Hound Tor, down through the Medieval Settlement and over to Greator Rocks. I left earlier than normal so as to be back at the car before the rain arrived (hopefully). I was armed with my Fuji GFX 50S and as usual my Fuji X-T2 for those on-the-move shots.

Having parked at the Hound Tor Car Park it was a short walk up the slope to the top, Hound Tor is very distinctive, recognisable from almost any angle. It has loads of interesting shapes within the rock formations.

From the South Eastern edge there is a great view of Greator Rocks with Haytor Rocks in the distance. There has been some significant erosion of late so the National Park have put fences across the normal route down to the Medieval Settlements with signs asking you to take the alternative route, I did.

It wasnít long before I reached the settlements.

There are several low walls where the old huts used to be, they are very small in terms of floor space, this particular one has been commandeered by a lone Sheep (fortunately for me as it shows scale).

A few more shots from the settlement.

After the Medieval Settlements I went across to Greator Rocks.

After some exploring I found a place I thought I would be able to get a good panorama of the Haytor Rocks skyline so I set up the GFX.

From here I set off along a different route back to the car via a Cyst Circle (which I couldnít see on the ground) I wanted to get a different angle on Hound Tor.

Just as I got sight of the Car Park the rain came in as forecast, fortunately though I got to the car before it came in heavy so a dry walk although short (2.4 miles).

Thatís all for this week folks, as always, comments welcome.

Bracing walk today, Paul, and although only short ( in your terms Wink ) full of interest as usual.
I wonder if the small rooms at the settlement were due to heating problems.
I remember it can get a little chilltyon the Moors,

Thanks David, you may be right about the small rooms, also people were smaller in those days plus all the materials had to be handballed, no machinery so I guess small was easier.
