This week I decided to go out to Childe’s Tomb on Foxtor Mires but just for the heck of it instead of parking close by around Whiteworks I decided to park at Norsworthy Bridge, Burrator Reservoir and walk out over Down Tor to Nun’s Cross Farm then over to Fox Tor and Childes Tomb.
Down Tor Stone Row.
Childe’s Tomb (Fox Tor in the distance).
I started my walk from the Norsworthy Bridge Car Park, I have done this route often so finding different things to photograph en-route wasn’t easy. Just up from the Car Park is this rocky outcrop has been “modified” by someone for makeshift BBQs etc, it is a nice little enclave though so I can see why people might want to party here.
From here it is just a short walk up to The Miniscule Sausage Area aka Snappers Tor, again I have photographed it before.
My next objective was Down Tor, as I made my way up it I looked back to The Miniscule Sausage Area and beyond to Burrator Reservoir which is quite low after the recent dry spell.
Further up the Tor is a tree which I have shot previously but I thought it was dead but I noted it has some growth still.
I crested Down Tor and started to head for the Stone Row, looking back this was the view of Down Tor.
It wasn’t long before I reached the Stone Row.
Next I was headed up to the old Enclosure just North of the Stone Row.
From here I was aiming for Nun’s Cross Farm but on the way is a disused Tin Mining Area with an interesting ruin beneath a large tree
It looks like the hut was abandoned before the tree became established.
There is also a Leat that runs through the old site.
Next stop was Nun’s Cross Farm.
After Nun’s Cross Farm crossed the Leat and followed a Dry Stone Wall that leads over to the base of Fox Tor.
It wasn’t very long before I saw the infamous Foxtor Mires.
Then shortly after Childe’s Tomb which is on the edge of the Mires.
Whilst at Childe’s Tomb I looked at the trip counter on my GPS, 4.5 miles, my route back to the car was the exact reverse. I decided to have lunch at the Tomb while getting a couple of different views.
After lunch I set off back along the Dry Stone Wall towards Nun’s Cross Farm.
As I made my way to the farm I could see in the distance some Pony Trekkers, too far away for a shot but they seemed to be heading to the farm as well, when I reached the farm they had unsaddled their Horses and were resting them in the farm enclosure so I just went on by.
After the farm I picked up the track back to Down Tor via the Stone Row.
Down Tor is a steep climb after 7 ½ miles, I reached the top happy in the knowledge that it was my last big climb.
All down hill form here.
That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.
