Dartmoor Photowalk 27 Windy Post Vixen & Gt Staple

This week I went out to Windy Post then on to Vixen Tor before heading up to an area I haven’t been to called The Sett Makers Bank which is just above Merrivale Quarry on the South Eastern side of Middle Staple Tor. From there I went up to Great Staple Tor before heading back to the car via the small water hole between Gt Staple and Cox Tors. Although there was constant cloud cover the temperature was in the mid 20s. I took my Bronica again loaded with Fuji Provia 100F as well as my usual Fuji X-T2.

Windy Post (Bronica).

I parked in the main Car Park on Pork Hill, again I had set off early to try to get around before the worst of the heat. First up was Windy Post, it is much photographed (by me as well) but always worth a shot when passing. I shot it with the Bronica (first shot) but I thought it was worth a B&W given the conditions.

Shot with the X-T2.

From here I went looking for a different composition of Vixen Tor, as I got to Feather Tor (a good viewpoint for Vixen) there were Ponies on it, lots of them, I broke out the Bronica again.

I moved forward of Feather Tor still looking for different angles, the Ponies were keeping an eye on me though.

Eventually I found a spot that gave me a slightly different view of Vixen Tor though if we weren’t in a particularly dry spell I may not have been so keen to stand here (Cottongrass means boggy ground).

So I set the Bronica up again.

After Vixen Tor I went in search of the Sett Makers Bank (or as it is called in the Dartmoor 365 “Sett Markers Bankers”). This is an area where there is plenty of large Granite slabs to make the Setts from.

It sits just above Merrivale Quarry and below Middle Staple Tor.

There is a good view of Great Staple Tor (my next objective).

I spent a while on Gt Staple and had lunch there while I was looking around for compositions to finish my film on.

Gt Staple is such a grand Tor that there are compositions everywhere you look so I shot some with the X-T2.

There is a good view of Roos Tor from Gt Staple, today there was firing on Merrivale Ranges indicated by the red Flag flying.

My route back to the car was via that small water hole between Gt Staple and Cox Tors but first I had to negotiate all the Clitter that surrounds Gt Staple.

That’s all for this week folks, as always comments welcome.

Thanks for taking us on an interesting walk yet again around Dartmoor. Dartmoor which i do not believe can be exhausted. So many thins to see, and such changeable weather. There are some great shots here. i do like the windy post one, also the one with the close up of the Ponies, they are lovely, I know what you mean about the cotton grass, awful stuff to get across like you say very boggy. Looking forward to your next walk .Tongue

Over here in Suffolk we could have done with some of that cloud cover, temps in the high 30's for three days, my garden has turned brown.
Thanks for yet another interest filled tour, most of which is totally new to me. Loved the ponies, and by the look of the close up, soon be new life
on the moor.
All that clitter looks like potential sprained ankle territory, hope your boots have good ankle support Smile

Thanks David, you're right the clitter is challenging. Wink
