This week I decided to take my new wide angle zoom lens to a couple of places that would benefit the extra field of view offered by a 20mm on the Fuji GFX 50S so I went over to Great Mis Tor to photograph the Devil’s Frying Pan then over to Fices Well in the old Prison Newtakes.
The Devil’s Frying Pan.
Fices Well.
The weather was being kind with blue skies and some nice clouds, enhanced by the use of a Polarising Filter.
Gt Mis Tor with Little Mis to the right, the ranges were firing so the red flag on the Tor is flying.
On the way up to Gt Mis there are nice views of Great and Middle Staple Tors.
Little Mis Tor looks different from the different angles.
This is a shot looking back towards Little Mis from the slopes of Gt Mis.
A Standing Stone amongst the Clitter on the slopes of Gt Mis.
Gt Mis Tor is a splendid Tor with many rock formations to explore but the Devil’s Frying Pan is the challenge as it sits on the very top of the Tor (above the right top of this photo) beside the flagpole, it is a bit of a balancing act with a large camera and tripod.
The flagpole is just out of shot on the right.
From the top you get a good view of the rest of the Tor’s rock formations.
I had lunch up there before heading off to find Fices Well, as I reached the old Prison Newtake fence I found this pool which was reflecting the clouds with Gt Mis in the background.
There was a rather oddly leaning “Standing” Stone beside it.
From the other side it appeared to be pointing the way to Gt Mis Tor.
Crossing the Newtake fence was easy (there is also a gate just out of shot).
On the way through the Newtake there is evidence of earlier occupation but much more recent than the normal ruins on Dartmoor.
Before long I had found Fices Well.
As I went around it (it was very wet and boggy) I found the opening to the actual “Well”.
Again it was quite a balancing act to perch a tripod on top of the steps to get shots of the inside. That 20mm came in handy again.
I set off back the way I had come to get back to that Stile over the fence.
From here there are good views of Gt and Little Mis Tors.
Next it was just a hike across the open ground to find the track back to the car park, these cows were sunning themselves.
A last shot of Gt Mis (red flag flying) before heading down the track to the car.
That’s all for this week folks, as usual comments welcome.
