The Boathouse

By TrevBatWCC
Had a Camera Club evening outing back end of July to Newmillerdam Country Park, a couple miles out of Wakefield down Barnsley Road. Usually the weather's not very favourable on our outings, but on the last couple we've been fortunate.
Sitting alongside the large lake is this Boathouse. Little is known about its history except that it was built by William Pilkington, and first appearing on a 1826 map. This Grade II listed building stood derelict for many years until it was restored to its former glory, and is now accessible to visitors and can be hired as a meeting room or for exhibitions.

Well, you were blessed with fine weather that evening, Trev, the late sunlight showing up the detail and textures in the stonework so well.
Love the pink flowering weeds that have taken root on the structure.
Mr. Pilkington (was he the glass manufacturer?) must have been a man of means when he was able to build such an elaborate housing for his boat.

Quote:Mr. Pilkington (was he the glass manufacturer?)
No, I don't think he was. The name Pilkington associated with glass belonged to a company founded in 1826 in St Helens. From doing a search on the name, I believe this William Pilkington was an architect born at Hatfield, near Doncaster, Yorkshire, on 7 Sept. 1758.

The light has detailed the architecture beautifully, Trev, and I like the fact that you have chosen to focus on part of the boathouse, which enables the viewer to see those details better than a complete shot of the boathouse would.
You are right, there is little information available about the place, except that it was used by the Pilkington family as a lakeside retreat, and that photographs from the early 1900's show the Pilkington family entertaining their guests; the gentlemen would shoot the wildfowl on the lake, with the ladies joining them at the Boathouse for a picnic lunch sent down from the Hall.

How lucky you were with the weather Trev. That evening light shows up the brick work in every little detail even to the Willow Bay herb growing in the Chimney pot.. A nice wee splash of pink .Love the golden ripples in the lake. I like it very much xx
