About 300 years ago, "Molly" was a common nickname for women called "Mary". Over the years there were probably many Molly Malones, but one fishmonger from Dublin was to make the name known throughout the world because of her sad fate. If Molly Malone truly existed as an historical person, is still being disputed by experts. She supposedly lived in 17th century Dublin and is said to have been a real beauty. However, there is no evidence that the song about her is based on a real woman of the 17th century or at any other time. Nevertheless, in 1988 the Dublin Millennium Commission endorsed claims about a Mary Malone who died on 13 June 1699, and proclaimed 13 June to be "Molly Malone day". Her statue was originally located on Grafton Street where she plied her trade, but was moved to here on Suffolk Street due to construction work and will remain here until 2017 when she will return to Grafton Street. Her boobs look to have been well fondled!
