another cool location shot Marcus, nice clean lighting.

I am looking to buy something a bit meatier other than speedlights for my location work and was looking at the Calumet Genesis 300B and their battery pack. I was messing about with my studio lights for a few shots in the garden with the kids the other week, and in bright sunshine they were pretty good and they too are only 300watt interfit heads. Would you say that the Genesis head would be adequate for outside shooting ?

sorry to pick your brains

I don't think you would regret moving to studio type lighting outdoors, I haven't. Have you thought of maybe hiring some of the outdoor options before making your mind up.

Build quality should be a point to address, I have finally killed one of my Bowens 500s after it blew over for the sixth time out on location (the third concrete landing). Hanging the battery pack doesn't always stop the light from falling especially if the softbox is nine foot of the ground. I suspect some of the cheaper brands would only take one fall.

I'll just add a second pic as a version to this one to show how a 500w bowens shot straight into the sun on full power looks, think it was about F18 or there abouts at midday, but I think you need more power than that for this type of shot.

that's great Marcus thanks for the that. I have read a few bits on the Calumet and build quality seems to be very good, whether it would take a full impact on concrete however is another matter. That shot looks really good and its well lit depsite shooting into the sun. Think i will go for it for the time being then maybe look at getting something meatier if i need to in the future. Cheers mate
