Than you for your votes and comments. I was a bit disappointed when i arrived at the location as I checked the tide times and worked out the tide should have been in but must have read it wrong. I sat on the sea wall for about 40 minutes waiting for the sun to set but it didn't look like it was going to come to much. It was getting cold and damp so I packed up and started walking back to the car saying to myself "don't look back as it may look much better". But i did look back just as the sky was turning orange and the sun was reflecting across the water and mud flats. I rushed back to the position I was at and stayed until the sun sank below the horizon.
Although I was pleased with the end results, your appreciation reaffirms that the suffering was worth while and is motivational to continue in my quest to master digital photography and there is still some hope for this old dog (who is learning new tricks as I was previously a film photographer)
