End of the line

Taken with flash to shadow foliage in foreground. Tried to capture the old and worn out look of the train cars and got an awesome sky to go with it.

Hello, Jim, and welcome to EPZ. I like your subject and the inclusion of the metal bit in the foreground, with the foliage covering it. I would be interested to know if you have done some editing on this because the colours look a bit unnatural to me. I would like to have seen the metal bits on the ground more to one side of the foreground rather than so central. But I'd also love to see a much closer shot of the rusting carriages, too, because they look so interesting. Although you have a wonderful sky, it is spoilt by the burnt out areas (white) in the clouds, and these are so strong that they take the eye away from your subject, so as nice as the sky is, I think that a crop to the top is needed. I feel that your camera had a problem with exposure, with such a bright sky, and that if you hadn't used your flash, the foreground would probably be a lot darker. I have done a modification where I cropped the top, adjusted levels, cloned some detail into the white clouds that remained, and sharpened the foreground foliage.

Thanks to your comments and mods, I appreciate all the help I can get. Your comments were right on and will be helpful going forward. I just need to learn more about image manipulation to put the pop in a photo I have taken rather than making it drab and flat.
