Fun at Dorset Steam Rally

By JuBarney
We had a long day yesterday at the Great Dorset Steam Rally, where wellingtons were the dress of the day!

After a very early start we arrived at Dorset in the dry but no engines were moving in the "playpen" as they had had considerable rain. However everyone was enjoying all the wonderful exhibits: the World War I display is fantastic and well worth a visit. Then after a dry morning a few engines ventured out and took turns taking visitors for a ride around the playpen (men and their toys!! - although us ladies love them too) and by late afternoon the ground was drying up and looked very favourable for the rest of the rally which is on until Sunday evening. In this shot they are "double-heading" as both engines were taking the visitors; perhaps to avoid getting stuck in the mud at the bottom end.

V2 is why you need wellies!

Glad you liked the pre-rally image and thanks for the C&Cs.

Glad you had a good day Ju… I did think of you whilst walking along the beach at Bournemouth in the pouring rain….

A super shot of theses two engines… shame about the mud in v2.

Excellent Ju, these take me back, I used to do the promotion goods for Gwent Badger Group, one year at Monmouth Show it poured all day, we set up ok but when it was time to leave it was chaos, just about every vehicle had to be towed through the mud by a tractor and chain to get to the road,
Fred.

On Tuesday and Wednesday they were towing people IN, even the campers, until they stopped all movement. This was after broadcasting on local radio for assistance from anyone with a tractor! All the main roadways on the rally field were a quagmire with either sloshy mud or thick mud about 6 to 8 inches thick, which was extremely hard work to walk through - even for the dogs (who I will show on another day).

Just as well they are big and powerful to negociate the mud, and help other people. Seen this happen a few times over the years, usually the New Forest show.

When looking at V1 it's hard to imagine the problems caused by V2.

It is always a wonderful atmosphere there and just wish I could have stayed and camped; the enthusiasts don't mind the mud!
