Victoria Amazonica

By ColleenA
Good morning from Melbourne....just a few sleeps until Christmas, thank you for all your Seasons greeting...
Thank you to Billy (Williamsloan) and Carol (Caziwinkels) for there UA's for my Christmas card, much appreciated.
These images were captured at the Adelaide botanical gardens....
The Victoria amazonica is a species of flowering plant the largest of the Nymphaeaceae family of water lillies. They have very large leaves, upto 3 m in diameter, that float on waters surface on a submerged stalk 7-8 m in length. it is native to the shallow waters of the Amazon river basin. It is Guyana's national flower and is depicted in the Guyanese coat of arms. The flowers are white the first night they are open and become pink the second night. they are up to 40cm in diameter and are pollinated by scarab beetles who have fun inside the flower at night...
The last 2 versions are the description of their night time activities....Sex and the lily...the diary of a beetle nightclubGrinGrinGrinGrin
Have a great dayGrinGrin

Hmm... Victoria, who is really Lilly, is a Nymph something, trapping unwary Scarab Beetles into a night of debauchery. What has come to the world of epz. Shock, Horror, even V2 looks slightly phallic... Tongue
Great photos, Colleen.
Just off for a lie down in a darkened Lilly pad...Smile

Colleen, your images are lovely, but I am just recovering from reading about the beetle orgy! Blush One minute I was innocently pondering gentle colours and reflections, and the next I was falling down the lilly pit of debauchery!!
Back to the pictures - love them. V1 if I had to choose for the lovely muted tones. Brilliant pairing with the plaque commentary. Smile

Not planning on such a journey myself, so have limited my viewing to the shots of the very beautiful flowers and their amazing leaves, which have always fascinated me, as they seem to harbour a whole world of wildlife themselves!
