Grand Magus Live : Heavy Rock Band.

By UrbaneMagick
Hi everyone,

sorry for my absence of late, not been out with the camera much at all & loads of gardening to do!!

This band came over from Scandinavia to play a little gig in Weymouth, Dorset..they have a Black Sabbath kind of feel to them,

Have a great weekend,

Gareth Smile

I guessed from the portrait that this wasn't a gospel singer!

Good feel to this Gareth , the dark tones and the guys serious expression work well with the kind of music he's performing Smile

Thankyou for the comments folks.

Lighting was virtually non-existent, three tiny red lights above the stage .

I've upgraded (well...bank of mum & dad has) my d1x to the d2x so this is the first gig photo with that camera.

He kept very still for 3 seconds....
Shadow from the neck of the guitar is a bit harsh, just as if a flash has lit it! Must have had some up light as well as the 3 red lights above the stage.

Hi Big fella........ unbelievable 3 seconds isn;t it.
........ no no uplighting, just the three red lights... surprisingly, the guy is around five foot tall..tiny... I wonder if it's the reflection of someone in the crowds flash?

That is very impressive for hand held at 3 seconds, and I really like the shot, I love the fact you can see where the neck of the guitar has moved.

You could have reduced the length of exposure if you had wanted by opening up the aperture somewhat. An f5.6 aperture would have given you closer to a 0.3 second exposure. That's a lot easier to handhold, especially if your lens has VR. Of course this would have given you a much shallower Depth of Field but I wouldn't have thought this would cause you a problem in this shot.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the votes..and constructiver advice..appreciated.

I tried the lens on all apertures, but at 5.6 I was hitting a completely seperate set of difficulties.

This is the only photo that was salvageable from a ton of photos taken at different setting... I think I need to woprk out the correct combination of settings...any ideas?

Big thanks Smile
Hey, I read your post about Live music photography and this is impressive considering the situation! I would of come down from F16 to around 5.6 or 8. I normally use fast primes (50mm or 85mm) around f4. Or consider something like a Tamron 17-50 f2.8.

I hope this helps

Hi Christographer Smile
..................... I took a ton of photos at various fstops from 5. up to 16............. just couldn;t get anything.
I'm guessing, that it's not just the Aperture, but the combination of settings that I need to correct.
The original of "this" photo, wasn;t too special, had to do a lot of burning to get this .
Bursting off your shots may help, three shots in a burst is my usual trick. Shooting in RAW?

A very intense and atmospheric moment that you captured here!
I like the “Rawness” and “Power” that radiates off the guitarist.
A great moment!
