Building 32

By chrisrudland
Building 32 at Orford Ness, called the coastguard lookout tower. Used as a lookout tower during both world wars and last utilised by the Royal Navy in the 1950's for an unclassified reason. Finally abandoned in 1960. In the foreground is a bomb rack which would have held some of the ordnance used on this island.

In the background is the lighthouse now automated, very worthwhile place to visit if you have the time. Thanks to Gibbo (Jon Gibbs) and Dad (Flindt) for inviting me and we all got back safely on the ferry, although Flindt nearly got himself blown up by walking into a minefield. Nicely done indeed though I can't help feeling the central composition isn't that strong...or maybe I'm just obsessed that cutting the left side off emphasises the lighthouse looking into the picture a bit more.

You've captured the atmosphere and uniqueness of the place superbly, Chris. Having now been there I feel this is wonderfully representative of the weirdness of the place; while had I not been there this would make me yearn to go.

Thanks to you and to Jon, for making it such an enjoyable afternoon. Sue and I had a wonderful time thanks to the extraordinary scenery, the light and, above all else, your and Jon's terrific company.
Great colours and composition there is so much to see in this image, very interesting.

Superb image Chris, really sums up the emptiness of the place. My Mother has been a National Trust volunteer on Orford Ness since it opened to the public. She'll be very interested to see this!
