Nice work, Yvonne. They are so much like horses that I can't help finding zebras endearing.
As to the background, looks fine to me, except that the dark green doesn't follow the same line on the left. There is also a bit of a change of colour top left. Well, you did ask! Think I'd probably have done just what you did to eliminate distractions. Others may advise differently.

With the background I've got this experience:
I use the tele lenses Sigma 70-300mm for Nikon D70 and then the bg is blurred, provided there's not anything bright that is hard to blur.
This is what I call a natural correction.
Normally I don't use PS for correcting my photos.
