Manx Cross

By WeeGeordieLass
Just couldn't leave the Isle of Man without grabbing a shot of a Manx Cross.

Found this one in the grounds of St Judes Church.

I thought it would be perfect for a black and white conversion which I processed in Topaz Black & White Effects.

I wondered if maybe the image would benefit from a bit of canvas added to the LHS to move the cross a bit more off center to the RHS. I think the cloning would be reasonably easy.

But what do you all think?

Thanks for looking.

It's the two tombstones background left, leaning in towards each other conspiratorially and watching you, that make the image for me. Plus the arc of cloud above. Without those elements I'd be looking for a landscape composition featuring the Manx Cross elegantly placed to one side. As it is, it's about height, it reads up/down, portrait works. Wouldn't change this in any way.

Totally agree with Moira this image isn't just the Manx Cross, but also the headstones to the left and the sky / cloud arrangement. I can't see how you could improve this and yes B+W is perfect as it makes you concentrate on the shape and form of the objects and not just some pretty colours.

Erik
Hi Danial,

I'm glad you like the texture as that is one aspect of the image I hoped to show.

Thanks

Hi Moira,

I walked round and round the beautiful cross looking for the best composition. As it's such a wonderful monument to those very brave men I wanted to shoot it at the optimum angle and do it some justice.

It's great that you like how I've portrayed the scene.

Thanks a lot.

I like this. Strong and near infra red in tones. Well done. Didn't need this topaz thing to do this. I'm not a fan of these effects programs, but that's just me. Very rooted in the old darkroom ways.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for your smashing crit. I'm glad I've managed to show the cross in it's lovely surroundings including the great sky and clouds. I'm pleased I decided to convert to black and white - the colour version is nice but this has more impact.

Cheers Erik,

Hi Paul,

Thanks very much for your congratulations on this image - it's much appreciated. I do think you have a point about Topaz processing........I've ruined a few reasonable images by going over the top with some of the effects. I'm learning to use it with a bit more restraint now though.

Cheers and thanks for your comment Paul.

On the contrary, you should do the opposite, add space to the right, and have the cross dead centre. (no pun)

I have to say the quality of the conversion done by your software is quite poor. You used ISO 100, and you have a load of noise in the sky, courtesy of Topaz. I have never seen any image, colour or mono that has been improved by this software, so it seems to be very easy to go overboard. The whole think looks fake, the sky, the clouds, the over sharpened cross.

Ive uploaded a mod with that idea for space on the right, and did everything possible to remove all evidence of Topaz!

Hope you like the idea, you can do better if you spend more time than I did, rant is now over.

Regards

Willie
