Maughold Head

By WeeGeordieLass
The rain started coming down on our last afternoon on the Isle of Man just as we discovered this view. I thought I could make a nice image of the scene so my stubborn streak kicked in and I sat in the car waiting for the rain to stop long enough for me to get a quick shot.

Eventually it dried up momentarily and I jumped out of the car, managing to take a few shots, before it started drizzling again.

This is my favourite.

Any constructive critique would be appreciated.

Thanks Guys

Elaine Grin

Having sold a lighthouse calendar (Australia admittedly) and many single shots , I can say it ticks most boxes:
the sea and the lantern is well dominating the shot, the characteristic shape is well lit and the sky is sufficiently interesting. Had you done it IN the rain, it would have been even better Smile
there are a few snags though: You did not hold the camera parallel to the lighthouse's main axis. So, the building is slightly distorted and leaning. You could also have walked a bit down the slope that would have avoided the distortion and the lantern would have been ABOVE the horizon, which is usually wanted. Maybe a POV bit further left and about 5-7 ms down the slope.
Of course, maybe there was something totally horrible spoiling the picture down there and you had a perfectly good reason to go exactly where you were.

I'd probably use a polarizer in that situation.

It is generally speaking a good lighthouse shot that would make most people very happy. I'm just picking on the bits that maritime minded viewer wants to see.

Can't compete with Annette's techie expertise and wouldn't try to if I could. I can only say that with a little tweaking to straighten the lighthouse this would be an image that I would have been pleased to take.
Hi Annette,

Your critique is great Grin

I've got to admit that I didn't even notice that the lighthouse was leaning Blush , but now that you've pointed it out it's very obvious to me. I'm amazed that I've looked at this shot so many times and yet never noticed it!!

Unfortunately it wasn't possible to go down the slope as it was too dangerous.

That's a fab tip about placing the lantern above the horizon and I'll bear it in mind next time.

Your help is much appreciated Annette and I'm a bit wiser now on the aspects of shots like this.

Cheers

Hi Lynne,

Thanks for your nice comment. Can't believe I didn't spot the leaning lighthouse.

I love this shot just as it is! Annette's comments are really good and helpful for us all and the Mod is great. I would have loved to do this with a 4 or 10 stop filter...................
