Happy

By WeeGeordieLass
My granddaughter Freyja in the sea at Blackpool yesterday. She loves being in the water and I wanted to capture the happiness she was feeling as she splashed and jumped about.

Please would you let me know if you think I have managed to capture her enjoyment.

I think I should have really had the camera set on shutter priority, and used a quicker speed but this moment happened so quickly I just fired off a couple of shots.

Also would the image have been better without the shadow on Freyja's face?

Any comments, mods, advice would be most welcome.

Yes this is a grab shot, and it is so difficult to get a child to pose right and act for the shot.
But it has interesting points to see from the camera, like the dress being shot so clear and sharp, and drops not being caught quite right, and her face in the frame is easily caught next time, so now you have a better idea of what the kit you have can deliver, so from the specs, you can see that you do need to start to, chance your arm, and shoot manual, easy really... 1/ the focal length for the exp time...and the ISO 200/400 just to get going...tweak as you get more used to your camera. But is a nice shot to keep for the family of course. Chen.

A nice candid family album shot.

The horizon is a little off level, so straightened in the mod. A little more contrast and sharpening help too.

regards

Willie
Hi Chen,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes this shot is definitely going in the family album - Freyja had such a great time.

Cheers

Hi Willie,

Thanks for the mod. The added contrast and sharpening look good.

Thanks a lot.

Hi, Elaine, I had a good look at this yesterday and felt it portrayed summer, sun, freedom, joy and innocence.
The only thing that bothered me about it was the sloping horizon, I didn't want to alter it at all otherwise.
I do think you managed to capture Freyja's enjoyment, and you already know where the little problems lie. You are, however, forgiven. The sun is coming in from the left, and so her arm has caused the shadow across her face, but it's perfectly acceptable.
Her hands show movement, but that's not surprising. You know what to do next time.
Pamela.

This is a nice image. So much better than the average holiday shot and minor photographic issues are not a problem with respect to enjoying the picture. Well done. You would have needed to ramp up the ISO to use a faster shutter speed as you are near the lens fastest aperture already - however, ISO400 would not have been a problem with a modern DSLR>

Hi Pamela,

I'm glad you get the same feelings from the image that I do. Freyja's Mum loves the shot too. Freyja didn't pose for the shot - she was just thoroughly enjoying the moment.

We had a wonderful day, and this shot will be a reminder to me of how I shared in her joy.

P.S. I'm off to India travelling down the length of the Ganges next February - can't wait to practice yoga and meditation on the banks of Ma Ganga.

Om Shanti Pamela

Hi Paul,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my shot of Freyja.

I hope that next time I'm faced with this kind of shot I am quick enough to dial in the optimum settings for the situation. I'll remember your good advice about ISO400 - so thanks very much for that Paul, it's much appreciated.

Cheers

Elaine
