How Green is the Valley

By WelshKiwi
Afternoon All Smile

Simple question......

Have I processed enough, or too much ???

All I did was move a few of the sliders in the RAW converter.

Have I over done it ?

Hope everyone is well.

It's looking a little too lime coloured I think, definitely a bit yellow too, though i can see you might have wanted more out of the trees. Hmm, no idea how to fix it I'm afraid!

Your doing ok Kid, just remember it's what your eye I likes that matters. There's 5 mods up there so far and all of them different and nothing that I would say was superior. Your comp is good and the lines from the hedges add good content.

Wish me luck ....off for a interview this afternoon...

Got to disagre with Dave above .. briwoolys mod is certainly an improvement for a number of reasons. your original shot lacks contrast and as such looks flat .. not good in a landscape image. The tweaks appear to have been a levels or curves adjustment and/or dodge and burn ... either method will work to some extent and it is this that has lifted the shot.

Compositionally its lacking too ... whilst its a nice vista theres nothing really for the eye to rest upon and as such you end up wandering around the shot without resting anywhere. The thing that partially works is the use of the 3 trees ... 3 is usually a decent number in compositions and despite being weaker elsewhere they do try to give the eye something to concentrate upon ... but they are too much in the foreground and blend too much into the background to truly work.

Trying to compress perspective with longer focal lengths is a good way to create landscape shots but you have to make sure that you are create clearly defined structures or layers within the composition for them to truly work.

Colour wise your originally is slightly yellow and this would need sorting in the selective colour tool of Photoshop if you have it.

Hope that helps..

Love the way the viewer is led into the image by the track Lee. Great composition; I like the line of trees going across the top, right 'third'... (isn't art a wonderful thing!? SO subjective! Wink)

What this needs is more 'punch' (talking about the original here) - i.e. reduce the highlight levels so they start to clip - same for the shadows. Then bias toward the shadows end - ever so slightly - then a final tweak in curves, some VERY light 'display' sharpening and that'd do it in these lighting conditions. Love to see this same scene captured at sunrise/sunset or after a huge rain storm where the sunlight is reluctant to come out from behind the clouds... Wink

I've done a mod for you Lee. I think the compsition is ok, the line of trees on the right draw you into the pic, its just a case of fine tuning the contrast and hue I think.

Hope you got back ok
