The Dubbie

By widtink
The Frances Colliery or the Dubbie was situated on the Dubbie Braes a popular Victorian tourist destination (AYE) the pit workings obliterated the braes but I suppose that's industry for you. At its peak the Dubbie employed over 1000 people but Thatcher and the Tories all but destroyed it. The final straw was a fire way down below and that ended mining in this area.

Another fine shot Rod and a gid use o the silver efexs. Surprised this much still exist o the Dubbie. Yae missed the other reason fur the name Dubbie - the miners working up tae their arm pits in water with the seams under the forth.

The fire yea mentioned was the same fire that saw the end o the michael pit n East Weymss in '68. Thats the price o having joinin tunnels!!

This a great piec of work, we may not how big a dubbie is but we know the size of barbed wire so we get the scale. Love hard steel against soft clouds. Regards, Si.

Hey John I know most people might not think a pit head is pretty sight but the beauty of it was that it gave over a thousand men a good living for a very long time. As with everything its the balance between the practical and the theoretical. The mining industry collapsing in Fife definitely made Fife a less "beautiful place" in my opinion.
