Wild

By wildatheart
Taken at Central Park Zoo in New York. I was hoping to give the impression that the snow leopard was taken in the wild.

At 200mm according to an old Olympus advert you 'Look braver than you are'.

It looks like you intended to look.

Super shot. I've tried a mod. The eyes should almost shine. I think that face will be even better given a boost with the dodge tool whilst darkening the rest just a bit?

I think you succeeded in making the snow leapard look as if it's in the wild, Alison, because there are no signs of captivity and you have captured the animal coming forward from behind a rock, adding drama, as if he has seen you and is coming towards you.
You have focused on the face using a shallow depth of field, giving a nice blur to the background, creating even more atmosphere. The viewer is drawn directly to those glaring eyes and the open mouth.
As to the eyes, the left one is darker than the right one, despite the overall exposure on the face looking balanced.

In my modification I have cropped to place those wonderful eyes on a thirds intersection (or thereabouts, there being two of them), and to have the foreground rock edge and the edge of the leopard's body meeting at the bottom frame edge. There is also more leopard and less rock in the frame. I did a clarity adjustment and a bit of overall sharpening. Then I selected the left eye, brightened it, cloned in a bit of detail to the iris, made the catchlight larger to match the right eye, and selectively sharpened both eyes, whiskers and mouth.

On reflection, comparing my crop with your original, yours shows a lot more depth to the background, showing the area that the animal has walked from, and perhaps gives more of the "wild" atmosphere that you were seeking.

By the way, I think you have a very exciting portfolio.

Thank you so much Pamela, I can see what you have done for the mod... looks great, but as you say, less like the feeling of being in the wild. Many thank also for the compliment on my portfolio, I can see my improvement over the years! So thank you again so much.

Its a good pose, and it does look like its in the wild. New York City is close enough to wild anyway.

I would like to see it with less of a blue tone, and more blur in the areas already blurred; sharper face; eyes less blue, just a little, they tend to be grey, very light blue or yellow.

Uploaded mod. View large.

Thanks Willie, nice mod... interesting to see the image less 'blue', and wasn't sure how far to blur, but that looks good. Thank you!
