  • Patch eyes! by woodlandlad

Thank you all for your great comments.

I used the wide aperture on this piccy because the cat wouldn't keep still. Also the lighting in my kitchen isn't the best and I didn't want to increase the ISO and risk the grains! My thoughts were "freeze the action and sort it out in Lightroom later". So consequently it turned out under exposed and I didn't pull it back enough.

Love the Mod Willy. Really makes the picture pop, and also that red tinge has disappeared.

I think I need to work on composition a bit more and get some practice in. What wound me up about this one is that when I tried to get the eye on a third it always looked as though there was too much white fur at the bottom which detratced from the eyes. Also the white patch in the background was a pain so I tried to apply a subtle vignette to tone it down a bit rather than photoshopping it out.

Once again thanks for the advice. Love this site, everyone is so friendly and I have learnt so much by looking at critique on other photos.

    Kind regards

Once again, thank you. This is originally where I had hoped to capture the Blackcap but sadly I ran out of patience!

Thank you. Patience isn't usually my strong suit but paid off in this case! Have been looking for his mate but can't seem to find one. Gonna keep looking and hopefully get a shot of her without the feeder tray !

Thanks both! I think the crucial thing to remember about taking shots like this is to wear long trousers and not shorts! Flippin nettles!

Oh yeah! I meant to say that I understand the principal of leading lines to pull the eye, but do slightly curved leading lines have a place in photography ????

  • Pensive Patch. by woodlandlad

Thanks for the comments all. Will remember to expose for the highlights and then use good old photoshop to bring the shadows and mids back. I have a friend that keeps telling me to shoot RAW but I never listen to her! Think I might have to bite the bullet and get a larger SD card and start doing it !

    Thanks again

  • Grasshopper! by woodlandlad

Thanks for the tips Frank. Composition was a bit of a problem on this one as I kind of kneeling down in a wet ditch at the time..lol. You're right though, I could have spent a bit of time in photoshop on this one !

    Love the mod.

Like this shot. Nice Vignette. Not sure about the title though, maybe "Coffin Dodgers" would have been more subtle ! Smile

  • Harris Hawk by woodlandlad

Thanks for the remarks. Bieng a beginner, I'm not sure what to do in future, should I maybe have lowered the aperture to decrease the blown highlights and then lighten up the darker colours in post processing?

I think I cropped the image in this way in order to focus on the fact the bird was looking in my direction, but I see what you mean about the orientation. I admit that I need to work on composition a little more !!

Thanks Saeid. I was wondering though wether or not to clone out the little fluffy cloud on the left. I think it pulls the eye a bit.
