HMS Astute on day 1 of the adventure!

it is amazing how from nowhere, so many support ships can appear in the NW

the image shows her beached on a sandbank off Kyle of Lochals (Skye bridge is to the rh side - out of shot)

i am re-assured that it can detect/track and incoming missile close to mach 1 at 50, an acoustic torpedo or other but, not a hope with a bank of sand clearly marked on a nautical map!!! no doubt the evening meal in captains quarters was civil that evening! lol

well.....i did think it was one of the old diesel ones when i looked, only later at 10 o'clock news did i realise it was HMS Astute!

I recall a comment from a Scottish Skipper hooked by a submarine many years ago and almost pulled under.
He said when we caught up with him, "John Wayne would have known we were there".
Seems the John Wayne story is apt again now. Nice quick thinking image Gary, lucky to be near at hand.

Apparently it is covered with a material that disguises it from sonar. Looking at the pictures it seems this material attracts the marine life. Perhaps they were just trying to scrape some of it off. Good shot Paul. Hope you had a good time there.
