The Brocken Spectre, a natural phenomenon, appears when a shadow is cast upon the upper surfaces of clouds opposite the sun, appearing many times its normal size. It is named after a peak in the Harz Mountains of Germany where it was first observed and recorded in 1780. In fact it may be observed in any mountain region.
