My comment on the preposterous beta-thingy announced yesterday, in the fervent hope that it follow Betamax into oblivion and take the scrap from my Buzz with it.

I am interested to know what Ollie, Francesco, Dougie and Nezih and others think of my photographs, not the results of some fatuous and ultimately meaningless Sudoku-substitute.

Wonderful use of lensbaby and effect, stunning colours! I totally agree with you about "the preposterous beta-thingy", Bill. Your photo with the title is a great challenging answer to it and it certainly deserves more than my humble UA.

Love it Bill. I think the verses thing will die a death. How can one of my street photography shots be compared to a macro of a fly?

A very good point from Ken.
Rusty reds and rivets aplenty, must have been a challenge to get the LB just right here Bill Wink

An analogy on the way the site's going with this VS- type novelty. A minority seem to want to spoil the site for everyone who enjoys it as it is and I suspect it's because they think they deserve more recognition than they get.

Having said that, very nicely done - and love the bleeding colour.

Interesting image, great credit for the title. Before looking at the gallery I spent time trying to find away of opting out of this extremely annoying VS thinging. My Buzz is full of sCrap.

Typical that this image should have lost its first VS wotsit.
Why can't we just scrap VS, votes etc and revert to "If you like this photograph, click here" which was such a major attraction to the site in the earlier days?

An exceptional creative, imaginative, and well composed observational piece, which screams out quality Bill. Certainly an image which I would have dearly loved to have captured.

While I can't personally see the point of this VS thing, my solution is simply to ignore it, in the fairly firm belief it'll go away.
I can however appreciate the fact that the EPZ folks are willing to try out new stuff, and keep the site interesting and perhaps relevant for a newer generation of photographers who lack the attention span of a gnat. Smile

That aside, a very fine image, Bill, which I really like.

What was he thinking?

perhaps I will add another loose so you can have the honor of the most loosing image on the site???

As to the lens baby thing, I would have to crop some off the bottom as it upset my eyes--- LOL, otherwise a good exercise in selective focusing.

Dunno what the new feature really means Bill.
I never pay any attention to them anyway !!
A good bit of gritty rust here.
And I am sure there is still some guy in Leith,
trying to flog of 50 Betamax players cheap !!

Bill, this is a wonderful image. Very good use of LB, great color and detail as well. All in all -- VERY creative.
The whole VS thing -- I really hope it goes away. What I continually enjoy about this site are:

1) Peer review -- offering help to members by providing useful, instructive critique. I've also learned so much by seeing other people's work.
2) Worldwide community of photo enthusiasts of all stripes. Yes, we were engaging in a social medium before that term and Facebook were invented.
3) Encouraging newbies who are timid about their work and want to get help without having to produce vote getting images. This is the biggest travesty of VS.
I can't imagine how this would do anything but discourage a newbie when he/she gets nothing but negative votes.

Also -- what is meant by "which photo is better?" How do we compare photojournalism to wedding portraiture to abstracts to botanicals to . . .

OK -- sorry to turn this into my personal soapbox.

Hopefully that VS or Very Silly Challenge will soon disappear, it's another ill thought out concept that won't catch on. The results are so random and meaningless and the spamming up of the buzz inbox was the most annoying thing about it!

I missed your very appropriate image and Ed's comment that I would subscribe to immediately.
And yes, I prefer this wonderful iron oxide rivet selective focus to some meaningless nude and time. Makes me grind mind teeth to hear that a peace of rust looses against a nude, a crappy snap against a perfect landscape.. etc.
Who can seriously enjoy comparing apples and old teabags?
